  Introduction  
1. Brief History
Taiwan Literature currently has become a special research field. The international academe has put more and more emphasis on it. In order to meet the need of current education and society. In 2001, our department proposed a plan to the Ministry of Education for setting up Graduate Institute of Taiwan Literature (GITL). After the plan was passed shortly afterwards, we conducted preparatory work. In August 2005, Graduate Institute of Taiwan Literature was inaugurated. Professor Fang-ming Chen was the first Dean of the Graduate Institute.

2. Characteristics
(1) In the vision of academic research, the institute aims to establish the global academic viewpoint.
(2)In the method of research, it combines Humanities and Social Science to achieve the goal of technological training.
(3)In the attitude of research, theory and application co-exist and the development of knowledge processing is emphasized.

3.Academic Journal
"Taiwan Literature Journal", issued every half year, was firstly published in June 2000.It has been published to the sixth volume till now.

4. Faculty
GITL has a team of outstanding and dedicated faculty members who are renowned in their fields of expertise. They include scholars in Taiwan literature, Taiwan history, Taiwan classical literature, contemporary literature, Taiwan literature in the Japanese rule period and contemporary literature in Japan, etc. At present, GITL contains full-time faculty members, including 1 professor, 1 associate professor, 1 assistant professor, and 1 teaching assistant.

5. Curriculum
The courses at GITL are designed to enhance the theoretical training of different study fields and make the development of literary meaning much more extensive. The introduction of modernism, post-structuralism, post-colonialism and feminism are all included in curriculum design. On language, except for Mandarin writing, different languages, ideologies, writing topics are presented in each period because of the complication of Taiwan historical background. Therefore, the courses will be designed to enhance the teaching of language-related study fields.

6. Master's Degree Requirement

(1)Credits Requirement: besides the completion of an M.A. thesis, all students of the institute must earn 32 credits to obtain their master's degree. Quarter credits can come from other institute's offerings related to the courses at GITL (taking the courses at an inter-university is included)
(2)Foreign Language Requirement:
a. Advanced English: before taking the examination of M.A. degree, students are required to get one of the qualifications as follows: TOFEL paper test above 550 points, TOFEL new computer test system above 213 points, TOEIC above 750 points or pass GEPT high-intermediate level.
b. The Second Foreign Language: all students have to pass the second foreign language test before they apply for the Oral Examination of the Thesis. The second foreign languages include Japanese, French and German.
(3)Participation in Academic Activities:
a. All students are required to present at least one paper at a conference.
b. All students also have to participate in national conferences thoroughly at least four times during the study period and present papers.
c. The graduate students have the obligation to assist and participate in all of the academic activities held by the institute thoroughly.
