25th Annual Harvard East Asia Society Conference
The New Normal: Changes and Exceptions in East Asia

Harvard East Asia Society (HEAS) is delighted to announce that its 25th Annual Conference will be held from February 19th to February 20th, 2022. This year’s theme is The New Normal: Changes and Exceptions in East Asia. The application period is now open.

Emerging in the post-pandemic world is a “new normal”—the abnormal is normalized, and the changes settle their feet on the earth and stabilize. But this is never an original creation in our time. This year’s theme attempts to explore the changes and the norms in East Asia, how they are discursively constructed and tinted with a regional characteristic. We welcome and encourage submissions from graduate students around the world engaged in research that relates to the examination of changes and exceptions throughout any time period and discipline concerning East Asia—including but not limited to History, Politics, Literature, Media, Linguistics, Religion, Art History, Sociology, and more.
Participating in the two-day HEAS Conference is a valuable opportunity to present new and exciting in-progress research and engage with fellow graduate students and scholars in the East Asian Studies field. The deadline to submit an abstract of no more than 250 words (and an accompanying bio of no more than 100 words) is December 18th, 2021 by 11:59pm EST. Submissions received after the deadline will be considered on a rolling basis. Application decisions will be released by mid-January and complete paper drafts will be due by January 23rd, 2022.
